The NC Challenge

This is the premise behind the Nourishing Cook Blog. To read about the 4 forks rating system please go here.

  • There are 773 recipes in the NT cookbook, not including variations on one recipe. My goal is to cook all of the recipes out of Nourishing Traditions. Repeat recipes and extra variations do not count toward the total.
  • Most posts will contain a recipe from Nourishing Traditions and my family's experiences in preparing and eating the meal or dish. This will include shopping, tips and tricks, any changes we made to the recipe, cute anecdotes, you get the idea. I will also share who ate the meal and liked it. I will declare the stats in that day's posts. If our family gives a meal or dish four “forks up” then I will show that on the post for that day, Special 4 forks up days with extra love for the meal will receive the rare but coveted empty plate award.
  • I will cook in season as much as possible (we are in the Portland, Oregon, US area). I like to do this to keep the costs down and also I like to shop from local farms (we belong to a CSA), farmer's markets, and our co-op. So you will not see fresh tomato and zucchini recipes until the US summertime months.
  • This challenge is for learning and for fun, and my goal is to not stress too much about it but to make progress toward the goal of feeding my family non-processed food as much as possible.

I’d love some advice about my food blog! I am just getting started. I remember hearing on the WP blogger cd from the WAP conf. that there is someone who can help me transition from blogspot to word press. I also need to learn how to get “subscribers” and just in general need to get some tips. Funny about the cooking Sally’s recipes idea… I had the same idea when I saw the movie Julie/Julia also as I think Sally Fallon is the Julia Childs of our time. But have decided to just write about my food tales right now and draw upon more authors than just Sally and also incorporate some talk about fitness as you need both to be healthy. How do I get others to link to my blog? Thanks for any tips! Impressive site you have!

Hi Kim,
This website is encouraging and motivating. After reading how well most people did with the biscuits I decided to try it again. My first round was horrible. They were chewy, hard, and stuck in your throat when you swallowed. I don’t know what I did! Well, they turned out great this morning. Truly an exciting triumph for me and my family!

When you make your sauerkraut or pickles, can it then be stored for weeks or months non-refrigerated? Or does it need to be “processed” in a heatbath or pressure-cooker?

as long as it is stored properly, it really will last as long as you want it to, if you are pickling… well then vinegar makes things last longer… really just stick to common sense, has this been stored properly, has the can been sealed, how long has this been around, whatever the case may be, really as in anything common sense takes precedence…. keep things around for as long as you know it is good, anything stored in vinegar last longer… but you still have decide for yourself what is good in your house…. just a thought…

just happened upon this site, I am currently reading through NT and am excited to see your families reviews before I start our venture through the book (plus I’d like to finish the book first).
