I spent about 3 weeks in Israel this summer and two weeks last summer for work. This was my favorite thing to eat there, hands down, and I ate it at least twice/day. In Israel, this salad (and variations thereof) is served with almost every meal, even breakfast! It is also served with a sprinkling of crumbly, farmer feta-like cheese. Sometimes it even came with olives and/or cashews. Occasionally it did come with romaine lettuce, but the lettuce was definitely not the main ingredient, as salads in the US.
